  • Brattleboro Interfaith Roots of Poverty Training Event

A local interfaith group committed to addressing the root causes of poverty is sponsoring a training in faith-based community organizing basics, taught by Vermont Interfaith Action on Saturday, February 28, 2015, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at Centre Congregational Church in Brattleboro. This training will help people of faith bring our values and convictions into the public square. Topics include how to: build relationships, identify self-interest, speak faithfully in public, frame an issue, conduct policy research, hold elected officials accountable, develop local organizing teams, and involve clergy. If you’re frustrated with the inequality in today’s society and passionate to introduce greater justice in your community, this event is for you!

If Friends have questions about the event contact Darah Kehnemuyi, PFM liaison to Brattleboro Interfaith Initiative.

  • Governor Shumlin Does Not Hear You

More than 24000 Domestic Violence Calls in 2013

    Dear Friends,

If you didn’t see the Governor’s comments on the news last night, this clip is worth watching. From WCAX: He says voters sent him a message to act on property taxes and education costs, not gun laws or picking the state dog and vegetable. ‘I just don’t know very many Vermonters who come up to me and say, ‘You know governor, all of my problems are because Vermont’s gun laws aren’t serving us well.’ It’s not something I’m getting; so let’s focus on the things Vermonters asked us to get done.”

The phone number at the Governor’s office is (802) 828-3333. Let’s let Governor Shumlin know that those 12,000 petition signatures we delivered two weeks ago were actual Vermonters asking him to take action on this issue!

And thank you to all of you who stepped up to share yesterday’s fact in support of criminal background checks. Lawmakers are appreciative of your efforts and saying “Please encourage more to write,” — and given the rhetoric used at last night anti-criminal background check rally it’s essential that we keep making our voices heard!

    Today’s Fact of the Day:

In 2013 in Vermont, abuse victims seeking help made 24,000 calls to the state domestic violence crisis hotline — an increase of 138% over the previous two years.

On behalf of these families we can’t afford to ignore our domestic violence problem and allow abusers to have easy access to guns. Please share this fact with your lawmakers right now. (Direct links to lawmaker e-mail addresses are below.)

Please drop us a quick e-mail letting us know that you’ve reached out to your lawmakers.

    Thank you!
    Ann

P.S. Here is the VTDigger article about yesterday’s rally at the statehouse against criminal background checks.

P.P.S. Here are the basic steps for sharing the fact of the day with your lawmakers.
    1) Highlight the fact of the day, and use the right-click button to copy it.

  • Gun Sense VT Act Now!

    GunsenseVT

    Dear Friends,
I’m thrilled to announce that S. 31 has been officially introduced in the Senate. That means that it’s crucial that right now we all send a quick, personal e-mail to our lawmakers letting them know that we support it. (Senators’ and representatives’ e-mails are here.) This bill has three key parts, like three legs of a stool that work together to help keep guns out of the wrong hands:

    1. Criminal background checks on unlicensed sales of firearms
    2. A state law prohibiting violent felons from possessing guns (this would give local law enforcement the authority to prosecute violations)
    3. The timely submission of relevant court records to the National Instant Background Check System when a person has been adjudicated as being a danger to themself or others

If you’re interested in reading the bill in its entirely, you can see it here.

It is a huge accomplishment to have gotten this far, and looking ahead our work is cut out for us. While there area number of lawmakers who are fully supportive of this bill, there are many who are:

    1. Not sure Vermont has a problem that this bill would address.
    2. Wary that their constituents might not be supportive since they often only hear from the voices against any reform.

It’s up to US to help lawmakers see that this bill is necessary to help address our domestic violence problem and prevent other dangerous individuals from having easy access AND that their constituents support it!

This will require us all to make a commitment to reach out to our lawmakers on an ongoing basis. If they hear our polite and persistent collective voices day after day, democracy will work the way it should, and a bill that has 81% of Vermonters in support will get passed.

The First Step: E-mail your lawmakers right now to show your support of S. 31 and encourage them to watch our new ad that highlights gun owners standing up for background checks.
    To help you do this:

    • You can quickly find your senators and representatives’ e-mail addresses here.
    • The link for the video to include in your e-mail is here: http://www.gunsensevt.org/gun_owners_for_background_checks
    • Please also drop us a quick e-mail to let us know when you’ve done it, so we can keep a tally.

The Next Step: On Monday we’re going to begin a two-week Fact-of-the-Day campaign in which we’ll focus on one key fact each day to underscore why this legislation is necessary. We’ll send you a quick e-mail in the morning with the daily fact, and then all you need to do is turn around and e-mail it to your lawmakers. The fact itself will be powerful, but it will be even more powerful coming from a constituent.

Quick, personal e-mails only take a few minutes each day, but they could EASILY be the determining factor that will make this bill successful.

You have the power to make the difference!

    Together we can do this!
    Ann

P.S. The daily fact e-mails are designed to make it easy for you to stay informed and speak up. However, if you don’t want to receive these emails and do want to continue to receive general GunSenseVT emails, please just e-mail us, and we’ll remove you from this specific list. Thanks!

Putney Friends Meeting Minute 2014.03.01; Minute on the Prevention of Gun Violence.

Live in “the virtue of that life and power that takes away the occasion for all wars.”

    George Fox (1624- 1691)

This applies to all violence including gun violence. Violence is a reflection of the ills of society. We challenge ourselves and others to look at the depth of this issue so we can address the heart of the matter.

Ann Braden from GunSense VT joined a group of Friends/friends at Putney Friends Meeting on January 18th to share the story of her work in founding this organization. Below is a link to a video explaining what they are trying to accomplish here in Vermont.

    GunsenseVT

Putney Friends Meeting has endorsed the work of GunSense.  Ann Braden will be with us on Sunday January 18th at 9:45am at Putney Friends Meetinghouse to speak with us about how we can help support legislation regarding gun ownership here in Vermont.

Gun Sense VT is an independent, grassroots, Vermont-run organization fueled by volunteers from all over the state. Supporters are gun owners and non-gun owners who come from every voting district in the state and cross party lines and who want to see criminal background checks — the single most effective systematic way to keep guns out of the hands of felons, domestic abusers and other dangerous people — required on most all gun sales in Vermont.

    Dear Friends,

I can still remember the first time I chose to make a financial contribution to the ministry of our yearly meeting.

As a young adult traveling in the ministry, living with student loans and an uncertain future, my resources were limited. Like many of us, I grew up with a sense of not enough. I told myself I had nothing to give, that I’d give when I was older, that I’d give next year. But as I clicked the “donate” button, I realized I was choosing to align what resources I did control with this spiritual movement that was changing my life.

For me, it started with five dollars.

Those two cups of coffee a month that I was willing to sacrifice opened a new dimension of relationship with our community of Friends. Giving financially has become a spiritual discipline for me, a practice of abundance. Like becoming a member in my local meeting, giving money is another way I join the Quaker movement as together we bear the fruit of Love in the world.

As 2015 approaches, our hearts turn to what’s most important – and hopefully away from email. I’m looking forward to a time of retreat, reflection and prayer as the old year turns to new. My bags are almost packed.

But before I go, I’m going to make an end-of-year gift to help sustain our shared work together in the coming year.

Here’s what this message is really about:

Financial support is just a small part of the many ways we accompany one another on this journey of faithfulness. But it’s an important part.

I believe giving financially is one more way we affirm the sacredness of every aspect and every moment of our lives, as we walk together in the Light.

In this time of global challenge and change, the world needs a way of life that doesn’t draw lines between “spiritual” and “worldly” concerns. We need an integrated approach that invites our whole lives to be filled with and guided by the Spirit. And this is something Friends have tried to practice for a long time.

In this season, I’m reminded that it’s vital to bring all of my life – including my relationship with money – into the Light.

Might this be true for you, too?

If you’ve already given this year, thank you.

If you haven’t given a gift – or haven’t even considered it this year – I hope you’ll join me in making a contribution in any amount by tomorrow night.

In this new year, may our lives and our local meetings be a blessing in our world.

    In faith and service,

    Yuletide Greetings,

Do you have a Christmas tree in your home? If so, then you are celebrating an ancient ritual called Yule or Jul, dating back to prehistoric Germanic and Celtic pagans. You are honoring  the Spirit in the trees. Isn’t it fascinating how Christianity absorbs and incorporates earlier pagan rituals into its celebration of Jesus’ birth? It has done this many times in history with other cultures and celebrations such as; the winter solstice, Saturnalia, etc.

Jesus was probably not born on this day, contrary to what some Christmas carols say (Mary’s Boy Child, Jesus Born On This Day, etc…). The actual date is unknown. The early Church leaders aligned it with the pagan solstice celebrations, either to blend in or take advantage of the parties, I’m not sure which. Jesus, being Jewish, celebrated Hanukkah, which is itself aligned with the winter solstice, coincidence?

    The early Protestants…

    DEAR FRIENDS,

I’m pleased to share with you the latest online edition of The New England Friend.

Read The New England Friend online

One of the great joys of my work is getting to see new Life rising up in so many corners of our Quaker community. In a season when our society and our world seem besieged by conflict, violence and injustice, I find hope in the ways our meetings–at our best–can serve as circles of Light. I keep hearing stories of how we are helping one another find courage, seek deeper relationship with our neighbors and with Creation, and join with others to build the world of wholeness and right relationship that Jesus called the Reign of Heaven–and what Martin Luther King, Jr. called The Beloved Community.

As the demonstrations seeking deep change in response to the laying bare of systemic injustices mount across the country, and with the release of the Senate report on torture making visible the tragic costs of failing to acknowledge that of God in one another, I believe recommitting ourselves to living our faith as Friends is ever more important. We need each other’s help to be faithful, to consider the implications of Ferguson and Guantanamo in the lives of each one of us. Friends, how is the Spirit shaking our assumptions, calling us to pray, to serve, to witness, to speak, to act? How can we share that news with one another, strengthening connections and helping each other find courage and humility to learn, to grow, and to live?

In this online content, you’ll find news from the growing edges of the Quaker movement in our region, including exciting updates giving you a glimpse of new explorations in several of our diverse local meetings.

    Hide

As you’ll read below, New England Friends are helping to kindle new collaborations in support of Quaker religious education, and partnering with Friends organizations like Quaker Voluntary Service and Friends World Committee for Consultation to bring the richness of the global community of Friends to enliven our life together in New England, in worship and in witness.

I hope you’ll also check out the updates on our work to improve our Yearly Meeting’s staffing and organizational structure to better support the life of the Spirit among us. Finally, we’ve included a summary of highlights from this past summer’s Annual Sessions, held for the first time in our 354-year history in Vermont. The full Minutes of business sessions are posted online. It would be wonderful to welcome even more of our Quaker family next summer at Sessions in Vermont, August 1-6, 2015.

Below are two events I’d like to especially highlight in the coming months, with more information to be posted to the online calendar and shared with local meetings soon. The conversation will be more complete with your meeting’s participation!

    • The Consultation on Engaging Young Adults will be held in Providence on January 24
    • A day exploring Emerging Practices in Quaker Outreach will be held April 4, 2015 – location to be announced

Finally, we want to hear from you. Do you have:

    • News to share about the life of the Spirit in your corner of New England?
    • Examples of successes or creative new initiatives in your local meeting?
    • Reflections on how your faith leads you into witness and action for our world?
    • Suggestions on how we might help this newsletter be an even more useful tool to connect and energize Friends communities in New England?
Please send an email to Office Manager Sara Hubner at office@neym.org(link sends e-mail) or call the office at 508-754-6760 to learn more about submissions, suggest upcoming themes and share how the Light is at work in your meeting.
